You’ve found the one. The wedding photographer whose portfolio made you stop scrolling, lean over to your partner and say, ‘this is what I want.’ Their images feel alive. Their prices feel worth it. You’re ready to say yes. And then the contract arrives in your inbox. Here is everything you need to know about wedding photography contracts in Alberta.
We’re Nandini and Jay. We’ve photographed weddings across Edmonton, Calgary, Banff, Canmore, and Jasper for the last 6 years and we’ve seen what happens when couples sign contracts they didn’t fully read and what happens when they sign ones that were written with care. This guide is everything we wish every couple knew before signing.

Why your wedding photography contract matters more than you think
A contract is not about distrust. It is about clarity. When you sign a photography contract, you are establishing a shared understanding with your photographer: what they will deliver, when they will deliver it, and what rights you hold over the images of your own wedding day.
8 things every wedding photography contract in Alberta should include
Your wedding date, venue, and coverage hours
Your contract should include your exact wedding date, the ceremony and reception venue addresses, and specific start and end times.
Exactly what’s in your package
Your contract should spell out every deliverable: number of edited images, gallery format, second shooter, album. etc. Our contracts outline the exact deliverables from your package, number of images, gallery format, delivery timeline. Nothing is left to interpretation.
Investment, payment schedule, and retainer terms
Your contract should clearly show your total investment, retainer amount, and when the remaining balance is due.
Cancellation, postponement, and rescheduling policies
Life happens. A solid contract explains what happens in each scenario, what you’re owed if you cancel, and what the photographer does if they need to cancel. Our contract includes clear policy for both client initiated and photographer initiated cancellations. We have a trusted Alberta photographer network for emergencies.
Image delivery timeline and format
Copyright and image usage rights
Second shooter and equipment backup
Jay and Nandini photographer together as a couple. You always know who is showing up. We carry full backup equipment to every wedding, no exceptions.
Liability limitations
Watch for clauses so broad they remove all accountability. Standard limitations are reasonable. Blanket immunity is not.

3 wedding photography contract red flags that should give you pause
Red flag 1 – No contract at all
Some photographers operate on a handshake. No contract means no protection. Move on.
Red flag 2 – One page, vague language
“Photographer will capture the wedding day” is not a deliverable. The contract should go in detail.
Red flag 3 – No cancellation or emergency policy
If it’s silent on what happens when the photographer can’t make it, ask before you sign.

Frequently asked questions about wedding photography contracts in Alberta
Do I need a contract even if I trust my photographer completely?
Yes. Contracts are not about trust. They are about clarity. Even wonderful photographers face emergencies or miscommunications.
Is a photography retainer refundable in Alberta?
Generally, no. Retainers compensate photographers for holding your date and turning away other inquiries. Standard practice across Canada.
Who owns my wedding photos in Canada?
The photographer retains copyright under the Copyright Act of Canada. What you receive is a personal use license as clearly defined in your contract.
What if my photographer cancels on me?
Depends entirely on your contract. A well-written contract outlines whether you receive a refund, replacement photographer, or combination.
How long does it take to receive wedding photos in Alberta?
Most Alberta photographers deliver in 4-12 weeks. Your contract should state a specific maximum and not an open-ended estimate.
Can I post my wedding photos on social media?
In most cases, yes. Read your model release clause to understand how your images may also be used by the photographer.

You deserve a photographer who has thought about all of this.
