The Complete Guide to Planning a Filipino Wedding in Alberta (2026)

A Filipino wedding in Alberta typically includes a Catholic ceremony with the yugal (veil and cord), arras (13 coins), unity candle, mano po (parental blessing), and rice shower. Receptions feature the money dance, bouquet toss, lechon, and run past midnight. Planning requires 12-18 months.

From Nandini & Jay: Jay is Filipino. When he photographs the yugal, he is not following a checklist of traditions he studied. He grew up watching the veil placed. He has performed the mano po with his own grandparents. He knows what the lechon arriving at a Filipino reception feels like from the inside and the sound the room makes, what it means, why it matters. Nandini came to Filipino wedding culture through Jay and the years they have spent photographing Filipino celebrations together. Together, they bring Jay’s lived experience and their combined work as photographers.

What makes Filipino weddings unique

Filipino weddings carry centuries of layered cultural influence. Spanish Catholicism, Chinese traditions, and the deeply rooted Filipino value of bayanihan, the spirit of community and mutual support. All of it shows up on a wedding day.

150–350 guests is typical. Some exceed 400. Wide networks of genuine connection where exclusion is a meaningful statement.

If you’re planning a Filipino wedding in Edmonton, Calgary or a destination celebration at Banff’s or Canmore’s iconic mountain venues, this guide covers everything.

Filipino wedding traditions: A complete ceremony guide

1. The processional

Filipino processions include coin bearers, ring bearers, Bible bearers, flower girls, 10–30 sponsor couples processing individually, principal sponsors, parents of both families, the wedding party, and the bride & groom. The processional alone can run 20-35 minutes.

2. Mano po, the parental blessing

One of the most emotionally charged moments. The couple presses their forehead to the back of each parent’s hand to receive a blessing. Quieter than anything else on the day. Photographs beautifully.

3. The arras. 13 coin ceremony

The groom presents 13 blessed coins to the bride, representing Christ and the 12 apostles. A pledge to provide and support their family. Note: there is no coin toss at Filipino weddings. The arras is a ceremony ritual, not a reception game.

4. The yugal, veil and cord ceremony

White lace over couple by sponsors, clothed as one. Infinity shaped cord by second sponsors, eternal bond

5. The unity candle

Mothers light candles and couple lights unity

6. The rice shower (bigas)

Bigas at church exit. Symbolizes abundance & blessing.

7. Principal sponsors, Ninong and Ninang

Tier 1 – Principal sponsors: 2-5 married couples, spiritual godparents, often give speeches.

Tier 2 – Secondary sponsors: veil, cord, candle, coin couples with specific roles.

Tier 3 – Community sponsors: process as an honour, no ceremony role. Total: 25 – 35+ couples.

A two-part ceremony tradition. A white veil draped over the couple (symbolizing unity) and an infinity-shaped cord looped around both partners (symbolizing eternal bond), placed by designated sponsor couples during the Mass.

What is the arras at a Filipino wedding?

13 gold or silver coins blessed by the officiant and presented by the groom to the bride at the altar. It represents Christ and the 12 apostles and the groom’s pledge to provide for his family. A ceremony ritual, not a reception game.
